First Major Step towards Energy conservation – World Bank musters $5.5 billion for solar projects

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The World Bank announced Wednesday 5.5 billion dollars would be invested in solar energy projects in five countries of the Middle East and North Africa in a bid to combat climate change. The Washington-based bank’s Clean Technology Fund approved financing of 750 million dollars on December 2 to boost the use of concentrated solar power, an advanced technology that concentrates sunlight to harness energy. Sir Richard Branson has unveiled the rocket plane he will use to take fare-paying passengers into space. SpaceShipTwo was presented to the world in Mojave, California. The vehicle will undergo testing over the next 18 months before being allowed to take ticketed individuals on short-hop trips just above the atmosphere. Google Claims its URL Shortening Service is More Secure

Google today launched its own URL shortening service, aptly named the Google URL Shortener (http://goo.gl/). The service is, for the moment, only available in the updated versions of the Google Toolbar and FeedBurner. Google says that its service will be more secure than the goodness-knows-how-many URL shortening services that already exist (tinyURL, bit.ly, tr.im, at least 50 others). Global warming satellite deploys antennas

PARIS (AFP) – A satellite sent into orbit to study the effects of global warming has successfully deployed three antenna arms that will track the oceans, the European Space Agency said Tuesday. The 315-million-euro (460-million-dollar) satellite was “in good health” as it deployed its antennas that give it a three-pointed star shape, the space agency said on its website.
